9:1श्रीभगवानुवाच

इदं तु ते गुह्यतमं प्रवक्ष्याम्यनसूयवे। ज्ञानं विज्ञानसहितं यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात्॥ 9:1॥

To you—the one without cavil—I will reveal the super-secret Knowledge {of the transcendental Truth} together with the science {of the phenomenal world}, on knowing which you will win everlasting freedom from the murky material existence. (9:1)

9:2श्रीभगवानुवाच

राजविद्या राजगुह्यं पवित्रमिदमुत्तमम्। प्रत्यक्षावगमं धर्म्यं सुसुखं कर्तुमव्ययम्॥ 9:2॥

This is the paramount of all learnings, the Royal Secret—sublime and supernal. Aligned with dharma (righteousness), it is worth following, profoundly gratifying, open to direct experience, and of enduring value. (9:2)

9:3श्रीभगवानुवाच

अश्रद्दधानाः पुरुषा धर्मस्यास्य परन्तप। अप्राप्य मां निवर्तन्ते मृत्युसंसारवर्त्मनि॥ 9:3॥

O Vanquisher of Foes! Those who lack faith and reverence in this divine knowledge fail to discover Me and return to the world, trapped in the unending cycle of death and destruction. ((9:3)

9:4श्रीभगवानुवाच

मया ततमिदं सर्वं जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना। मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि न चाहं तेष्ववस्थितः॥ 9:4॥

I pervade the entire cosmos through My Unmanifest Form, and all objects within the cosmos are in Me; yet I am not in them. (9:4)

9:5श्रीभगवानुवाच

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम्। भूतभृन्न च भूतस्थो ममात्मा भूतभावनः॥ 9:5॥

Behold my mystical magnificence: the cosmic existences do not abide within Me, and neither does my Self reside within them, despite my pervasive presence among them all. Nevertheless, I stand as their sole Creator and Sustainer.(9:5)

9:6श्रीभगवानुवाच

यथाकाशस्थितो नित्यं वायुः सर्वत्रगो महान्। तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि मत्स्थानीत्युपधारय॥ 9:6॥

Understand it in this manner: Just as the mighty wind, freely roaming everywhere, ever stays in the etheric space, so does the entire cosmos exist within Me. (9:6)

9:7श्रीभगवानुवाच

सर्वभूतानि कौन्तेय प्रकृतिं यान्ति मामिकाम्। कल्पक्षये पुनस्तानि कल्पादौ विसृजाम्यहम्॥ 9:7॥

O, Kaunteya! At the end of the Kalpa (one day of the Semi-God Brahmā), all the beings return to My {Unmanifest} Nature (Prakriti), and at the inception of the subsequent Kalpa—the dawn of Brahmā's next day—I create them once again {send them forth once again}. (9:7)

9:8श्रीभगवानुवाच

प्रकृतिं स्वामवष्टभ्य विसृजामि पुनः पुनः। भूतग्राममिमं कृत्स्नमवशं प्रकृतेर्वशात्॥ 9:8॥

By subordinating and re-energizing My Nature, I, again and again, bring into being the cosmos with its objects and creatures—all helplessly subject to the laws of Nature. (9:8)

9:9श्रीभगवानुवाच

न च मां तानि कर्माणि निबध्नन्ति धनंजय। उदासीनवदासीनमसक्तं तेषु कर्मसु॥ 9:9॥

However, My acts {of Creation and Dissolution} do not bind me {to the cycles of Creation and Dissolution or the laws of Nature), O, Dhananjay, as I remain unattached and neutral. (9:9)

9:10श्रीभगवानुवाच

मयाध्यक्षेण प्रकृतिः सूयते सचराचरम्। हेतुनानेन कौन्तेय जगद्विपरिवर्तते॥ 9:10॥

Under my guidance, Nature gives rise to all living beings and inanimate objects, O Son of Kunti! In this manner, the world continues to revolve through alternating cycles of Creation and Dissolution. (9:10)

9:11श्रीभगवानुवाच

अवजानन्ति मां मूढा मानुषीं तनुमाश्रितम्। परं भावमजानन्तो मम भूतमहेश्वरम्॥ 9:11॥

The ones who lack good sense show disdain for Me when I assume the human form, unaware of My higher nature as the Supreme Lord of the universe. (9:11)

9:12श्रीभगवानुवाच

मोघाशा मोघकर्माणो मोघज्ञाना विचेतसः। राक्षसीमासुरीं चैव प्रकृतिं मोहिनीं श्रिताः॥ 9:12॥

Their aspirations, actions, and knowledge yield no fruition; these misguided individuals seek refuge in the deluded nature of devils and monsters. (9:12)

9:13श्रीभगवानुवाच

महात्मानस्तु मां पार्थ दैवीं प्रकृतिमाश्रिताः। भजन्त्यनन्यमनसो ज्ञात्वा भूतादिव्यम्॥ 9:13॥

O, Pārtha, {on the other hand,} the great souls imbued with divine qualities, recognizing Me as the Imperishable Source of all Creation, worship Me with unshaken faith. (9:13)

9:14श्रीभगवानुवाच

सततं कीर्तयन्तोमां यतन्तश्च दृढव्रताः। नमस्यन्तश्च मां भक्त्या नित्ययुक्ता उपासते॥ 9:14॥

With Me always in mind, firm in their faith, ever singing My glory and chanting My names—such great souls, working assiduously, pay Me their obeisance and worship Me with intense love and devotion. (9:14)

9:15श्रीभगवानुवाच

ज्ञानयज्ञेन चाप्यन्ये यजन्तो मामुपासते। एकत्वेन पृथक्त्वेन बहुधा विश्वतोमुखम्॥ 9:15॥

Others worship me differently—by following the Path of Knowledge and perceiving themselves as one with Me. Still, others worship the all-facing Me as separate from them. (9:15)

9:16श्रीभगवानुवाच

अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञः स्वधाहमहमौषधम्। मन्त्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यमहमग्निरहं हुतम्॥ 9:16॥

I am the Vedic sacrifice; I am the Vedic spiritual fire ritual; I am the oblation of food offered to the ancestors; I am the medicinal herbs; I am the sacred Mantras; I am the melted butter poured into the holy fire; I am the fire of the sacrificial fire-ceremony; and I am the offering in a yajna. (9:16)

9:17श्रीभगवानुवाच

पिताहमस्य जगतो माता धाता पितामहः। वेद्यं पवित्रमोङ्कार ऋक्साम यजुरेव च॥ 9:17॥

In this world, I am the Father, the Mother, and the Grandfather; I am the Sustainer of the world; I am the Ultimate Knowledge to be realized; I am the sacred syllable "Aum," and I am the Rigveda, Sāmaveda, and Yajurveda. (9:17)

9:18श्रीभगवानुवाच

गतिर्भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी निवासः शरणं सुहृत्। प्रभवः प्रलयः स्थानं निधानं बीजमव्ययम्॥ 9:18॥

I am the Provider and the Ultimate Goal of all; I am the Supreme Ruler of the Universe; I am the Witness, the Shelter, the Ultimate Refuge, and the Universal Friend; I am the Origin and Dissolution of the universe; and I am the Foundation, the Resting Place, and the Indestructible Seed of Creation. (9:18)

9:19श्रीभगवानुवाच

तपाम्यहमहं वर्षं निगृह्णाम्युत्सृजामि च। अमृतं चैव मृत्युश्च सदसच्चाहमर्जुन॥ 9:19॥

I warm the water bodies, gather and hold the rains within clouds, and then release them upon the earth. I am both death and immortality; I am existence and the cessation of existence, O Arjuna. (9:19)

9:20श्रीभगवानुवाच

त्रैविद्या मां सोमपाः पूतपापायज्ञैरिष्ट्वा स्वर्गतिं प्रार्थयन्ते। ते पुण्यमासाद्य सुरेन्द्रलोकमश्नन्ति दिव्यान्दिवि देवभोगान्॥ 9:20॥

Those who practice the Vedic rituals of the three Vedas, purified of their sins, who delight in consuming the Soma juice and partake in worldly pleasures, worship Me through sacrificial fire-ceremonies, seeking entrance into heaven. By virtue of their righteous actions, they indeed attain heaven, the celestial realm of Indra, the Lord of heaven, where they enjoy the blissful festivities of the gods. (9:20)

9:21श्रीभगवानुवाच

ते तं भुक्त्वा स्वर्गलोकं विशालं क्षीणे पुण्ये मर्त्यलोकं विशन्ति। एवं त्रयीधर्ममनुप्रपन्नागतागतं कामकामा लभन्ते॥ 9:21॥

Having thus enjoyed their stay at the expansive heaven, on the fruits of their virtuous deeds getting exhausted they fall back into the murky material existence. Therefore, those who {primarily} seek sensual enjoyment by following the principles of the three Vedas achieve only recurring births and deaths. (9:21)

9:22श्रीभगवानुवाच

अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते। तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्॥ 9:22॥

For those who always have Me in heart and mind {and no other deity}, and who love and worship Me in all manners, I take care of their well-being, providing protection to what they have and bringing attainment of what they have not. (9:22)

9:23श्रीभगवानुवाच

येऽप्यन्यदेवता भक्ता यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः। तेऽपि मामेव कौन्तेय यजन्त्यविधिपूर्वकम्॥ 9:23॥

O Son of Kunti! Those devotees who, with faith and reverence, worship other deities unknowingly worship Me through them. Nevertheless, this form of worship is of a lower nature. (9:23)

9:24श्रीभगवानुवाच

अहं हि सर्वयज्ञानां भोक्ता च प्रभुरेव च। न तु मामभिजानन्ति तत्त्वेनातश्च्यवन्ति ते॥ 9:24॥

I am the Receiver and Lord of all sacrifices. But those who do not know Me in my real nature, fall {in the cycle of birth and death}. (9:24)

9:25श्रीभगवानुवाच

यान्ति देवव्रता देवान् पितृृन्यान्ति पितृव्रताः। भूतानि यान्ति भूतेज्या यान्ति मद्याजिनोऽपि माम्।। 9:25।।

Those who worship {subordinate} gods go to them after death; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who offer sacrifices to ghosts and spirits, are born among them; but those who worship Me {and Me alone}, come to Me {and therefore do not come back to this world}. (9:25)

9:26श्रीभगवानुवाच

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति। तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः।। 9:26।।

Whosoever offers to me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, I accept that offering of love made by those of a pure heart. (9:26)

9:27श्रीभगवानुवाच

यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत्। यत्तपस्यसि कौन्तेय तत्कुरुष्व मदर्पणम्।। 9:27।।

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer as an oblation, whatever you give in charity, and whichever austerities you practice—dedicate them all as offerings to Me. (9:27)

9:28श्रीभगवानुवाच

शुभाशुभफलैरेवं मोक्ष्यसे कर्मबन्धनैः। सन्न्यासयोगयुक्तात्मा विमुक्तो मामुपैष्यसि।। 9:28।।

The Yoga, in which all acts are dedicated to God renouncing attachment to their fruits, will free you from the fetters of bondage to the auspicious and inauspicious results of those acts {and their tendency to bind one to the cycle of birth and death}. Thus freed, you will eventually reach Me. (9:28)

9:29श्रीभगवानुवाच

समोऽहं सर्वभूतेषु न मे द्वेष्योऽस्ति न प्रियः। ये भजन्ति तु मां भक्त्या मयि ते तेषु चाप्यहम्।। 9:29।।

I am equally disposed toward all: I loathe no one, nor do I fancy anyone. But those who worship Me with love and devotion are in Me, and I am in them. (9:29)

9:30श्रीभगवानुवाच

अपि चेत्सुदुराचारो भजते मामनन्यभाक्। साधुरेव स मन्तव्यः सम्यग्व्यवसितो हि सः।। 9:30।।

Even if a person of the most reprehensible character begins to worship Me with unwavering dedication, they should be regarded as having a noble heart, as they have cultivated a virtuous determination. (9:30)

9:31श्रीभगवानुवाच

क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति। कौन्तेय प्रतिजानीहि न मे भक्तः प्रणश्यति।। 9:31।।

By nurturing this virtuous determination, one swiftly transforms into a righteous soul, attaining lasting peace and serenity. O Son of Kunti, understand that my devotee shall never encounter downfall or destruction. (9:31)

9:32श्रीभगवानुवाच

मां हि पार्थ व्यपाश्रित्य येऽपि स्युः पापयोनयः। स्त्रियो वैश्यास्तथा शूद्रास्तेऽपि यान्ति परां गतिम्।। 9:32।।

O Pārtha! {Regardless of their birth} Even individuals of sinful origins, women, those belonging to the mercantile class and farmers (Vaishyas), and manual and menial workers (Shudras) can attain the highest spiritual destination when they seek refuge in Me with wholehearted devotion. (9:32)

9:33श्रीभगवानुवाच

किं पुनर्ब्राह्मणाः पुण्या भक्ता राजर्षयस्तथा। अनित्यमसुखं लोकमिमं प्राप्य भजस्व माम्।। 9:33।।

{When others can reach the highest spiritual destination}, What to speak of the righteous Brāhmins and the pious royal sages! In this fleeting world devoid of lasting happiness, they all find everlasting peace and joy and Nirvāna in My embrace. (9:33)

9:34श्रीभगवानुवाच

मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु। मामेवैष्यसि युक्त्वैवमात्मानं मत्परायणः।।9:34।।

Have Me in mind; pour your heart's love and reverence upon Me; Me you worship, and Me you pay your homage to. Thus, having immersed your being into Mine and thus having unified yourself with Me, you shall assuredly come to Me. (9:34)
