न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः। अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ॥ 2:20॥

Anvaya (Construction)

अयम् (यह आत्मा) कदाचित् (किसी काल में भी) न (न) जायते (जन्मता है) वा (और) न (न) म्रियते (मरता है) वा (तथा) न (न) भूत्वा (उत्पन्न होकर) भूयः (फिर) भविता (होने वाला है) अयम् (यह) अजः (अजन्मा) नित्यः (नित्य) शाश्वतः (सनातन) पुराणः (पुरातन) शरीरे (शारीर के) हन्यमाने (मारे जाने पर भी ) न (नहीं) हन्यते (मारा जाता)।

यह आत्मा किसी काल में न तो जन्म लेती है और न मरती है, न कभी जन्म लेगी। यह अजन्मा, नित्य, सनातन और पुरातन है। शरीर के मारे जाने पर भी यह नहीं मारी जाती।


English

It is never born, nor does it die; it is inherent, ancient, and eternal; it neither comes into being nor ceases to exist. It remains unaffected even as the body falls. (2:20)

शरीर बदलने के अर्थ में आत्मा जन्म लेती है। लेकिन नए सिरे से पैदा होने के अर्थ में आत्मा जन्म नहीं लेती। इसलाम और ईसाइयत में यह धारणा है कि आत्मा जन्म लेती है, क्योंकि हर आत्मा पहली बार ईश्वर द्वारा रची जा कर पैदा की जाती है। लेकिन भगवद्-गीता के अनुसार तो आत्मा ईश्वर का शाश्वत अंश है।


English

The physical body perishes at death, yet the soul or the true Self remains untouched. Following death, a facet of the empirical self -endures, composed of the mind (mana), intelligence (buddhi), ego (ahankār) bearing the imprints of life experiences, virtues and vices, and the five subtle, invisible essences (Pancha-tanmatra) of the five "elements" (Pancha-bhoota or Pancha-mahaa-bhoota) that constitte the physical universe. This entity transitions to a new physical form for rebirth, accompanied by the soul. This is called a new "birth" of the soul. But in reality, it is not the real Self, the soul, that is reborn, but a portion of the empirical or "false" self that is reborn. The soul accompanies the false self during rebirth because, being under the spell of Māyā, it always remains attached to the false self until it gets liberated by following one of the several paths laid down in the Bhagavad-Gitā by God. Therefore, the soul is never truly "born" nor does it "die." Conversely, the empirical self, a fusion of mind, intelligence, and ego, undergoes permanent dissolution - and thus truly "dies" - when the soul becomes "detached" from them upon attaining spiritual knowledge and subsequently achieving liberation. The complexity of the ideas in the note will gradually be resolved as we advance in our journey through the spiritual knowledge presented in the Gitā.
