'अधिष्ठान' का अर्थ होता है 'आधार', 'आसन' या 'आश्रय'। कार्य की सफलता में एक उदाहरण से 'अधिष्ठान' की भूमिका समझें। एक ही उम्मीदवार अगर चुनाव में स्वतंत्र खड़ा होता है या किसी लोकप्रिय राजनीतिक दल से खड़ा होता है, तो चुनाव में उसकी सफलता की संभावना में काफी फर्क पड़ जाता है, क्योंकि चुनाव में 'अधिष्ठान' या 'आधार' अथवा 'आश्रय' (इस संदर्भ में राजनीतिक दल) की भूमिका महत्त्वपूर्ण होती है। ऐसे ही, आध्यात्मिक क्षेत्र में मुक्ति के लिए किस देवता को आप अपना 'अधिष्ठान' या 'आश्रय' बनाते हैं, या किस आध्यात्मिक मार्गदर्शक को आप अपना 'आधार' या 'अधिष्ठान' बनाते हैं — इस पर भी आपकी आध्यात्मिक सफलता या सिद्धि की गति बहुत-कुछ निर्भर करेगी।

In verse 18:4, “adhishthhāna” means “position,” “seat,” or “shelter.” The concept of “position” can be illustrated through examples. A person may work tirelessly towards certain goals for the welfare of others but may make limited progress despite their best efforts. However, when that same person occupies the position of a minister, their efforts can yield highly successful results, thanks to their new “position” or “seat" of influence. Likewise, in the realm of spirituality, the choice of deity or spiritual guide one aligns with plays a significant role in one’s quest for spiritual success or attainment, particularly in the pursuit of Nirvāna. The chosen deity or guide serves as the foundation or shelter for one’s spiritual journey, influencing the path and outcome of their spiritual endeavors. The term "Providence" or "Daiva" signifies both the destiny shaped by one's past deeds and divine intervention or God's Grace.
