ज्ञान कर्म संन्यास योग
न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते। तत्स्वयं योगसंसिद्धः कालेनात्मनि विन्दति ॥ 4:38॥
न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशम् पवित्रम् इह विद्यते, तत् स्वयम् योग-सम्-सिद्धः कालेन आत्मनि विन्दति।
इह (इस संसार में) ज्ञानेन (ज्ञान के) सदृशम् (समान) पवित्रम् (पवित्र) हि (निश्चय ही) न (नहीं) विद्यते (है) तत् (उसी ज्ञान को) कालेन (समय के साथ) योग-सम्-सिद्धः (योग के माध्यम से सिद्ध हुआ व्यक्ति) स्वयम् (स्वयं ही) आत्मनि (अपने भीतर) विन्दति (प्राप्त करता है)।

इस संसार में ज्ञान के समान पवित्र करने वाला कुछ भी नहीं है। उस ज्ञान को कितने ही काल से योग के द्वारा परिपक्व हुआ मनुष्य स्वयं या अपने-आप ही आत्मा में पा लेता है।

There is nothing in this world as purifying as {spiritual} Knowledge. After a long engagement, when Yoga attains fruition, this Knowledge begins radiating inside us automatically. (4:38)

यह श्लोक इस बात का संकेत करता है कि सदैव कोई मानवीय शिक्षक—जिसे हिन्दू परंपरा में ‘गुरु’ कहा जाता है—अनिवार्य नहीं होता। ज्ञान सतत स्वप्रयत्न के द्वारा, कालक्रम में स्वयं भी प्राप्त हो सकता है। बुद्ध को भी ज्ञान इसी प्रकार प्राप्त हुआ। फिर भी, किसी प्राज्ञ नर या सिद्ध व्यक्ति का मार्गदर्शन इस मार्ग में अत्यंत उपयोगी और सहायक हो सकता है।

Verse 4:34 addresses the imparting of spiritual Knowledge by God-realized sages, akin to sowing seeds within us. This initiation marks the beginning of our spiritual journey, which gradually takes root and flourishes through practice. In our current times, finding accomplished saints is increasingly rare. However, verse 4:34’s purpose can be fulfilled by immersing oneself in the direct Word of God—the Holy Gitā—and embracing chosen Yogas like Bhakti, Jnāna, Dhyāna, Karma, or Japa Yoga, all outlined in the Sacred Book. Treating the Bhagavad-Gitā as one’s Guru and seeking guidance from her is a valid approach. The Bhagavad-Gitā encompasses an unparalleled reservoir of spiritual Knowledge as the direct Word of God. While human Gurus may fade over time, the Bhagavad-Gitā remains an eternal source to dispel doubts and offer guidance. Being the Word of God, it provides authentic wisdom surpassing any human Guru. The verse’s phrase “swayam ātmani vindati” (discovers within oneself) implies the potential for attaining spiritual Knowledge and enlightenment without a human Guru. Many renowned God-realized saints lacked a human Guru yet achieved spiritual heights through direct inner realization.
