Commentary

English

The Sun-god: The sun, a fiery mass, is not inherently divine. When we refer to the "Sun-god," we are acknowledging the divine entity entrusted with the oversight of the sun's material functions. Insights from the Gitā and other scriptures suggest that various gods and goddesses are assigned specific domains within nature's intricate workings. Manu: "Manu" denotes the archetypal man or the progenitor of humanity. The Sanskrit term for "human", "manusya" or "mānava," connotes "of Manu" or "children of Manu". "Manu" is associated with the title or name of fourteen earthly rulers, or as the head of dynasties that commence with each cyclic kalpa (aeon) during the universe's periodic renewal. The title of the text "Manusmriti" incorporates this term as a prefix, focusing on the first Manu—Svayambhuva, the spiritual son of Brahmā. According to Hindu cosmology, each kalpa comprises fourteen Manvantaras, each overseen by a distinct Manu. He is believed to be the offspring of the Sun-god. Ikshawāku: Ikshawāku, believed to be the son of Vaivasvat Manu, was a legendary king who established the Ikshwaku dynasty. It is within this dynasty that Bhagawān Rāma, a central figure in Hindu mythology, was born.
