एवं बुद्धेः परं बुद्धवा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना। जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम्॥ 3:43॥

Padacheeda (Word-by-Word)

एवम् बुद्धेः परम् बुद्ध्वा सम्-स्तभ्य आत्मानम् आत्मना, जहि शत्रुम् महा-बाहो काम-रूपम् दुः-आसदम्।।

Anvaya (Construction)

एवम् (इस प्रकार) बुद्धेः (बुद्धि से) परम् (श्रेष्ठ) बुद्ध्वा (जानकर), आत्मना (आत्मा द्वारा) आत्मानम् (स्वयं को) सम्-स्तभ्य (स्थिर करके) महा-बाहो (हे महाबाहु) काम-रूपम् (कामरूप) दुः-आसदम् (दुर्जय) शत्रुम् (शत्रु का) जहि (विनाश कर)।

इस प्रकार बुद्धि से परे शुद्ध आत्मा को जानकर स्वयं (बुद्धि) द्वारा स्वयं (मन) को वश में करके, हे महाबाहो, तुम इस दुर्जेय कामरूप शत्रु का हनन कर डालो।


English

Thus, know through intellect what is ultimate (the soul), and, controlling by {higher} self (the intelligence) yourself (the lower self—mind), O Mighty-armed Arjuna, conquer the unconquerable desires. (3:43)

Commentary

English

Only a few seconds back, in verse 3:33, God said: "Everyone is under the sway of Nature. Even the knowledgeable ones act according to their nature. How much will efforts to restrain accomplish!" This utterance of the Lord might have left some readers in doubt, thinking God was saying that the intrinsic tendencies of both the ignorant and the enlightened could hardly be controlled whereas here He tells us to exercise self-control. We must not fail to notice that the earlier utterance in verse 3:33 was exclamatory rather than categorical. The Lord just said that it is challenging for all to control their inherent tendencies. Now, in the current verse, the matter stands clarified. Yes, it is challenging but possible to reign in the inherent tendencies, even one's core nature. Through sustained and systematic efforts, the higher self of a person can always modify or restrain the lower self—the mind and the senses—to conform to the standards set by God for optimizing happiness in this life and attaining Nirvāna in the life beyond.
