Commentary

English

This Knowledge is superior to other forms of knowledge such as grammar, chemistry, or mathematics. It is the ultimate (Parama) Knowledge as it leads one to God. The Yogasutra of sage Patanjali and many other scriptures talk of various siddhis or spiritual attainments like Garima (गरिमा), Anima (अणिमा), Laghima (लघिमा), Mahima (महिमा), which confer different supernatural powers upon a spiritual seeker, like becoming invisible, tiny like a particle, or traveling through space. But they are not the supreme spiritual attainments. God-attainment, also called Nirvāna, is the ultimate spiritual attainment. In the Bhāgawata Purāna, sage Kapila, believed to be an incarnation of Nārāyana, tells his mother Devahuti as follows: “That patient devotee of Mine (God’s), by My Grace, gets rid of all the doubts by attaining Knowledge, and on his causal body being destroyed, he quickly acquires the position of Nirvāna from where the spiritual seeker does not ever come back. O, Mother, if the mind of the spiritual seeker, enhanced by the practice of Yoga, does not get entangled in the siddhis (supernatural powers) like Anima, he ascends to My imperishable nectarine Supreme Abode” (Ch. 27, Third Skandha, Bhāgawata Purāna). This reconfirms that ascending to God’s Transcendental Abode is the supreme attainment (Parama Siddhi).
