O Son of Prithā, recognize Me as the chief among priests—Brihaspati; among the war generals, I am Skanda; and among water bodies, I am the ocean. (10:24)

Commentary

English

Brihaspati is revered in Vedic literature as the preceptor of the gods, possessing mastery over sacred wisdom, charms, hymns, and rituals. He also serves as the wise counselor to Indra in battles against the Asuras. Brihaspati represents the heavenly archetype of the Brāhmin class, especially embodying the role of the earthly purohita or family priest. A hymn in the Rigveda is attributed to him. Skanda is the Hindu god of war and the firstborn son of Shiva. He is also known as Kumāra, meaning "Youth" or "Boy," as he is believed to have never married. Skanda possesses immense strength and commands the army of the gods. Legend has it that when he planted his spear in the earth, no one could move it except for the Bhagawān Vishnu, causing mountains and rivers to tremble.
