A

Answer

Spirituality is a serious subject — an exceedingly serious subject. In truth, life itself is a very serious matter; yet very few people comprehend its gravity. Those who come to understand that a human being can be reborn in any species, in any wretched condition, and those who learn what misery can befall the soul after death — they truly awaken.

One should reflect seriously on how to remain happy and blissful in this life and in the life after death. The Bhagavad Gita is the finest guide for this.

Therefore, I wish to remind you once more that those who are serious about the spiritual welfare of their lives should bring these three scriptures into their homes without fail. Study all three regularly — if you are not excessively busy with work, set aside some time every day. If you are extremely busy, then at the very least read one chapter of the Bhagavad Gita daily with understanding, and on weekends study the Bhagavata Purana and the Ramcharitmanas. Reading the Ramcharitmanas generates deep peace in the heart, and from the character of Shri Rama, lofty spiritual samskaras (impressions) develop. The Bhagavata Purana is a fathomless ocean of spirituality — it too should be read at least on weekends.

If this practice is maintained continuously for six months, you will find that your spiritual foundation has begun to take shape.

You must have heard your saints say that it takes hundreds of births to attain moksha. These hundreds of births are spent not in attaining God, but in cleansing the house of one's mind for God's entry. When the mind becomes pure, God's entry occurs of its own accord. In the Ramcharitmanas, the Lord says: 'Nirmala mana jana so mohi pava, mohi kapata chhala chhidra na bhava.' — 'One whose mind is pure attains Me; deceit, trickery, and guile do not please Me.'

If you regularly study the three scriptures mentioned above, your mind will be purified swiftly. Those who wish to accelerate the process of self-purification even further should engage in self-evaluation and self-review (atma-mulyankan and atma-samiksha) every night; and if not daily, then at least on weekends they must sit down and do so. This makes the process of self-purification a hundred times faster. Therefore, do continue the practice of self-review and self-evaluation. Those among you who are extremely eager or ardent about their spiritual progress may send a message to the number ending in '15' — I shall arrange special, separate guidance for them. In this group, the majority of members currently have a general or preliminary interest in spirituality; therefore, it would not be possible or appropriate to discuss highly esoteric subjects here repeatedly. Such matters are suitable only for advanced practitioners and spiritually developed seekers.
