The Yogi surpasses those who engage in rigorous austerities, those with profound {scriptural} knowledge, and even those committed to {ritualistic Vedic} karmas (actions). Therefore, O, Arjuna, aspire to become a Yogi. (6:46)

Commentary

English

The underlying intention is for Arjuna to cultivate a state of even-mindedness akin to that of a Yogi who perceives God in all things and all things in God. This aspiration underscores the importance of equanimity and spiritual insight, encouraging Arjuna to embrace a perspective that recognizes the divine presence in every aspect of existence. Bringing the focus back to the ongoing battle and the imminent deaths of countless soldiers, the Lord indicates that this even-mindedness extends to perceiving God equally in death and life, as He would elaborate on later in verse 9:19.
