English
The arrogant ones, believing themselves superior, intoxicated by their wealth and false prestige, perform sacrificial ceremonies merely as a facade, for ostentation, and to flaunt their lordliness, without adhering to the true essence and principles of the scriptures. (16:17)
English
The primary purpose of performing Vedic sacrificial fire-ceremonies (yajna) during the time when the Lord spoke the Holy Gitā to Arjuna, as well as before and after that period, was often to secure one’s ascent to heaven after death. However, this verse emphasizes that the mere performance of sacrificial fire-ceremonies cannot guarantee a place in heaven for those who are moral offenders or deeply engrossed in materialism.
