कर्म के संबंध में भगवान ने दो मुख्य विकल्प दिए हैं — एक इस श्लोक में, और दूसरा अगले श्लोक में। ईश्वर के लिए काम करना पहला विकल्प है, और कर्म के फल का त्याग (फल में आसक्ति का त्याग) कर कर्म करना दूसरा विकल्प, जो श्लोक 12:11 में दिया है। भगवान के लिए काम करने का मुख्य अर्थ है — दुनिया-भर में एक मिशनरी भावना के साथ काम करते हुए भगवान द्वारा बताए गए उस शाश्वत या अमर धर्म ("धर्ममृत्युमिदं" — कभी मृत न होने वाला धर्म — 12:20; "शाश्वतधर्म" — 11:18) का सारी धरती पर प्रसार करना। इस अध्याय के श्लोक 13 से श्लोक 19 में उस अमर या शाश्वत धर्म की परिभाषा दी गई है। यह धर्म सार्वभौम है क्योंकि यह लगभग साढ़े तीन दर्जन उन मानवीय मूल्यों और सकारात्मक भावनाओं को विकसित करना चाहता है, जो कि वास्तव में सार्वभौमिक हैं — और जिन्हें दुनिया-भर के सभी मनुष्यों द्वारा अपने अधिकांश स्थानीय रीति-रिवाजों और नियमों को छोड़े बिना अपनाया जा सकता है। यह धर्म व्यक्तिगत और सामाजिक मामलों के सूक्ष्म प्रबंधन (micro-management) में नहीं जाता है।

What could be the meaning of “working for Me”? God has given three options regarding karma or actions: one we saw in verse 12:6, where he suggested dedicating all actions to God; He gives the second option in this verse and a third in the next. Working for God is the option provided in this verse and renouncing the attachment to the outcome (fruits) of actions is the option given in verse 12:11. The meaning of working for God could include working for His pleasure of God. The meaning could also include spreading the eternal and universal religion revealed by God in the Bhagavad-Gitā by working worldwide with a missionary spirit. This religion is indicated in verse 12:20 as the “never dying” religion. (धर्म्यामृतमिदं—the religion that would never die– 12:20). Verses 13 to 19 of this chapter define the general and universal elements of that eternal religion (Shāshvata Dharma). This religion is universal because it seeks to instill, among all, the nearly three-and-a-half dozen human values and positive emotions that are truly universal and can be adopted by all humans worldwide without abandoning many of their local customs and rituals that do not go against these values. This religion does not go into the micro-management of personal and social affairs; it provides the general principles to apply to micro matters. In this context, it would be helpful to recall verses 18:68, and 69, which say that no one will ever be as dear to God as the ones who spread His Words spoken in the Holy Gitā. This is what “working for Me” could precisely mean, among other things.
